Where should we shoot? Post location ideas here, with photos when possible. We need to consider "dystopian" locations for the "real" world as well as locations that can serve as "virtual" spaces in the series.
This is Los Cerritos Middle School in Thousand Oaks, California. The Principal is a bit of a...pain, so permission to film there might be a little difficult, but maybe not since i am an "alumni." Rumor has it that it was originally constructed to be a prison, but the developer committed suicide and they decided to make it into a school. I don't know how much of that is true, because some teachers say they just made the choice to buy airconditioning instead of windows. The only window in the entire school is the art room, which in recent years has become covered in ivy. I can also get better pictures the next time I go home.
^that file is a gif with more than one picture, if it doesnt show up you can see more here: LCMS Campus.gif
You've probably all seen this driving south on the 101, and according to my dad they have no insurance on the place and it keeps flooding when it rains? I'm not too sure about this place but the internet site has email addresses to get in contact with people.
There is a naval base in Ventura and also an old shipyard over by the Channel Islands Harbor and Ventura Harbor.
Blair and I went out around campus, especially around the lagoon, and took a bunch of shots around the area. There's some sort of construction warehouse or something back there too. I think it might be a construction site for Theater/Dance setups, but not sure. We could look into that and see about filming there.
So I realized I didn't actually post the photos up we took around the lagoon. I'm going out around Lancaster/Palmdale for more photos, so i'll have more up ina day or two. Here's a sample of what I got so far:
Yes, surprising how this part of campus can be made to look so run-down. I can see using these locations in the zone.
This is amazing! Do you know what the access is like? Is there anyone keeping people out? Is it fenced off? Or can anyone pretty much do anything they want?
They used to run tours up there sometimes but I think it's out of business now and privately owned, but they do use it for filming sometimes. They might make an exception for us.
Indeed, I wouldn't want to be trapped in there if I were one of the characters in our series...
Ellison Hall, second floor...was suprising terrifying this morning when i had to go to a 9am lab. i took a crappy picture on my cell phone, but i could definately see it turned into a dark (perhaps sterile) hallway for a virtual world. BTW, there weren't any lights? and i believe there was some minimal construction going on as well
also! Once my roomate gets back, i need to ask her the name of a particular street in isla vista/santa barbara that definately would be easy to get to and great for filming. I'll try to get her to drive me over there to take some pictures, but there were these odd barn-like buildings, storage containers, and also some metal structures. very cool.
Oh yeah, I forgot the cross street, but my brother and I were driving around downtown and there was this really sketch area...somwehere on Fig(?) about six blocks across from the bus stop.
once again a bad picture i took with my phone (seems to be the only thing on me) but this is a door in the back of Campbell hall. Its got a short stairwell down to it and also its hard to see in the picture, but there is a rusted "danger" sign over it.
its in the outdoor mall thing, Paseo Nuevo
Yeah I can see downtown areas in santa barbara and maybe even LA as being good virtual spaces. SB appears kind of clean and bright, whereas LA seems a little more grimy cityscape, so we can have multiple takes on the virtual world
These actors have been cast thus far:
Caroline Do as "Kaja"
A multi-cultural chameleon, Caroline Do grew up in the barrio known as
''lil Chinita." Once she reformed her tagging ways, Caroline went to
Berkeley, studied and backpacked across Europe and Asia and was even
recruited by the CIA and State Department. Yet her love always stayed
true to film-making and television production.
Caroline was PA-ing the Sony film “Qué Culpa Tiene Mi Raza” when the
director spotted her behind the camera and decided to give Caroline a
shot in front of it. A simple shot of her character at her Mexican
mother’s bedside quickly catalyzed into the emotional turning point of
the film. Upon the director and several crew members’ urging, Caroline
plunged herself into the acting trenches and has been working towards
the spotlight ever since.
Maria Elena Laas as "Maria"
Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Saudi Arabia and Texas, Maria Elena began modeling in
Japan at 13. She has done over 90 national and international
commercials and print campaigns of which include Miller Lite, Carlsberg, Coors Lite, AT&T, Budweiser, Ford, Coca Cola,
and Nespresso opposite George Clooney.
She has also garnered several film credits, including Alan Cumming's
"Suffering Man's Charity," the blockbuster “The Hot Chick” opposite Rob
Schneider and Anna Faris and "Airplane Disasters". She can be seen
starring in the upcoming films "American Weapon," "Kill the Habit", "Pastor Shepherd" opposite Danny Trejo and "Lunatics, Lovers,
and Poets" due out in theaters April 2010.
Preview Shoot #1
Details about our first shoot.
This went amazingly well! We shot several scenes involving Maria, including a fabulous dolly shot through the mustard fields. Maria's character, or some attributes of her, are based on movement, sensing, and navigating via wind currents, and these scenes reflected that. We also shot her fabricating a trojan horse fish out of encrypted flowers, then realeasing it into the ocean to be caught later by a security AI who likes to fish. (Future shoot!) Hopefully Thuongvu, who took many stills photos during the day, will post some of them here!
At any rate, great work by those of you who were on the shoot. You should be very proud! And for those who weren't, you'll see the footage soon!
Ok, they should be showing now. I've been having problems all the other times I was trying to upload them. I think the problem is that I tried to upload too many at a time.
Great pics TV! What an awesome day all-around, thanks for everybody's help!
